What to Wear for Senior Pictures: A Photographer’s Guide for Stylish, Timeless Photos
If you’re wondering what to wear for senior pictures, you’re not alone! It’s one of the first things seniors (and parents) ask me when they book a senior session. The goal? Outfits that feel true to you and photograph beautifully, so you’ll love these images now and in 20 years. I’ve been doing senior portraits for over 12 years, and while I’m all about variety and personality, there are definitely some tips that will help you look your best.
Neutrals are always a safe and timeless choice: creams, beiges, dusty blues, sage green, and soft blush all photograph beautifully. But that doesn’t mean you have to play it safe the whole time. I’m loving when seniors mix in a statement piece: think bold patterns, a funky jacket, or a dress with movement. The key is balance. One fun piece + one neutral = photo magic.
My Classic Senior Session includes one outfit change (that’s two total), and the Premium Senior Session gives you up to two hours and as many changes as we can squeeze in! Most locations don’t have restrooms, so be prepared to get creative—bring a blanket to hold up for a quick change, use the car, or rock the forest wardrobe swap. We make it work!

This list is short but important.
🚫 Neon colors – They cast weird color tones on your face and are super hard to edit.
🚫 Big logos – Unless it’s your school or future college, skip the branding.
🚫 Wrinkles – Please iron or steam your clothes. Wrinkles are a nightmare to fix in Photoshop.
🚫 Bad shoes – A great outfit with bright neon sneakers? No thank you. Choose shoes that go with the overall vibe.
👙 Bra straps – Be mindful of strapless tops, and make sure your undergarments aren’t visible in a way that might distract in photos.
🟠 Self-tanner – I beg you, please don’t self-tan for photos. It always turns orange and patchy, especially on hands and feet. Trust me, it’s not worth it.
While I love trendy and bold looks, I recommend bringing at least one classic outfit. Something you won’t cringe at in a decade. A favorite pair of jeans, a flowy dress, or a button-down shirt and tie can go a long way.
And don’t forget to rep your school! Bring a college hoodie, your varsity jacket, or even a cap & gown if you want that one classic senior shot.
Whether we’re shooting in my all-white studio or out in the woods, the same rules apply when planning what to wear for senior pictures. Keep it cohesive, make sure your clothes fit well, and remember: comfort = confidence.
So What to Wear for Senior Pictures?
Stick to neutrals, avoid neons and wrinkles, bring a mix of casual and dressy, and most importantly—wear what makes you feel like YOU. Your senior session is a celebration, and you deserve to look and feel your best. When in doubt, Pinterest is a great place to gather outfit inspiration and see what styles you’re drawn to.
